The Internet has made large amounts of information available to the average computer user at home, in business and in education. For many people, having access to this information is no longer just an advantage, it is essential. Yet connecting a private network to the Internet can expose critical or confidential data to malicious attack from anywhere in the world. Users who connect their computers to the Internet must be aware of these dangers, their implications and how to protect their data and their critical systems. These problems are solved by

What is a firewall?
A firewall is a set of related programs, located at a network gateway server that protects the resources of a private network from users from other networks. An enterprise with an intranet that allows its workers access to the wider Internet installs a firewall to prevent outsiders from accessing its own private data resources and for controlling what outside resources its own users have access to.
Types of firewall:
There are basically two types of firewalls, these are hardware firewalls and software firewalls. A hardware firewall is a physical device that is installed between the modem and computer or, in the case of network of computers, it may be linked/incorporated into a broadband router being used to share the internet connection can also act as a firewall device. A software firewall however is a software application that is installed onto the computer system that you wish to protect and this is usually the computer with the modem attached to it.
How firewall works?
There are two access denial methodologies used by firewalls. A firewall may allow all traffic through unless it meets certain criteria, or it may deny all traffic unless it meets certain criteria. The type of criteria used to determine whether traffic should be allowed through varies from one type of firewall to another. Firewalls may be concerned with the type of traffic, or with source or destination addresses and ports. They may also use complex rule bases that analyze the application data to determine if the traffic should be allowed through. How a firewall determines what traffic to let through depends on which network layer it operates at. A discussion on network layers and architecture follows.
After installing the firewall the network will allow the trusted sites and the un-trusted sites are blocked by the firewall.
Antivirus software is a term used to describe a computer program that attempts to identify, neutralize or eliminate malicious software. This type of software is so named because the earliest examples were designed exclusively to combat computer viruses; however most modern antivirus software is now designed to combat a wide range of threats, including worms, phishing attacks, rootkits, Trojan horses and other malware.
Antivirus software typically uses two different techniques to accomplish this:
- Examining (scanning) files to look for known viruses matching definitions in a virus dictionary
- Identifying suspicious behavior from any computer program which might indicate infection. Such analysis may include data captures, port monitoring and other methods.
