History:-

Before the World Wide Web came PLATO was developed the world’s first online community:

Online forums, message boards, email, chat rooms, instant messaging, remote screen sharing, and multiplayer games.

The word PLATO means Programmed Logic for Automated Teaching Operation.

PLATO was founded by CERL (Computer-based Education Research Laboratory) in the year 1960s. It was one of the first time sharing systems in the public. In the early 1960s it is a small system to supporting a single classroom. In 1972 the PLATO was supported for one thousand users working simultaneously.

PLATO Notes:-

Talkomatic:-

In 1973 CERL released the product called Notes designed by David Woolley. It is the first general purpose computer message board (Note). It is a program for reporting system bugs. For each note it allowed single response. Added Feature on the same year it allowed 63 responses for each note.

1973, Doug Brown designed a program to chat among users on the PLATO. In that the screen was divided into several horizontal windows. So each user can type the message in separate window at the same time. First it was designed for 6 users to chat as a group in realtime. This was one of the most popular application on the PLATO systems. Term-Talk:-

Personal Notes:-

In 1974 Kim Mast extended the Notes and implement to send a personal mail to others. The note appeared in a separate screen. Then mast and Woolley integrated all the PLATOs communication features into a single application.

Group Notes:-

In 1976 Woolley developed the Group Notes. It took the concept of Notes and expanded. The use of Group Note was created a public forum for discussions of subjects were people to communication among groups working on individual projects. Ray Ozzie was the key player who worked on the PLATO systems. He wanted the users able to share information with coworkers in the same office. So in 1984 he founded Iris Associates and that was funded by Lotus. They modeled Lotus Notes after PLATO Notes. The original vision of Notes is online discussions, email, Phonebooks and document database. On that time the network facility is not like today compared very slowly. So iris had to develop system level code to develop Name server and databases. Iris began to speak Notes as ￯﾿ᄁ￯ᄒタ￯ᄒワGroupware￯﾿ᄁ￯ᄒタ?. The term groupware refers Communication, Collaboration and Coordination among groups of people. To achieve this goal they used client/server architecture that PC￯﾿ᄁ￯ᄒタ￯ᄒルs connected to a LAN. And server that communicated to other server machines in a group. So this made easy to users that exchange information to the coworkers in a group. In 1986 the product of Lotus Notes was completed. In 1989 Lotus Notes they released their very first product Lotus Notes Release 1.0. The feature of Release 1.0 is Group Mail, Group discussion, and Group Phone Book. In 1995 IBM purchased Lotus mainly to achieve the Notes technology. On that time the Notes developers facing some strategies of increasing and the importance of web competition improved in the market. Then they developed Notes server that used to connected to the web, retrieve pages from the web and allow users to view the pages in a Notes Client. In the year 1996 Lotus released the version ￯﾿ᄁ￯ᄒタ￯ᄒワRelease 4.5￯﾿ᄁ￯ᄒタ? that changed the name Domino 4.5. (Lotus Domino 4.5 Server and Lotus Notes 4.5 Client). Lotus Domino provided an interactive web application. It develops a business solution for the internet and intranet. The applications use in daily work, such as mail, calendar and scheduling, Web browsing, and discussions.   Now the Lotus Notes and Domino 8 is the latest version built on Eclipse. Lotus Notes 8 is an open-source, Java based platform.   And the feature of this is support Open Document Format (ODF). Mail recall feature, View the collaboration history for specific people and expanded support for business solution.    Notes uniquely and powerfully combined communications, flexible collaboration, lightweight application development, data-based views of functions and processes, third-party packaged apps (wish there were more), and a secure client-server and web-based replication and distribution network capability. Notes pushed the envelope on user productivity.

Doug Brown designed this program in 1974, for the use of two people to communicate without existing their current program. The word￯﾿ᄁ￯ᄒタ?term talk￯﾿ᄁ￯ᄒタ? was used to talk others if want to ignore that person use ￯﾿ᄁ￯ᄒタ￯ᄒワterm reject￯﾿ᄁ￯ᄒタ?.
